Stories from India, Volume 1

Sale price¥64.00

This treasury of Paramhansa Yogananda’s Indian tales will delight both the casual reader and students of Eastern thought. Featuring a gamut of characters: from saints, to thieves, lions and frogs, these stories were told by Master in his lectures, informal talks, and writings.

Yogananda knew that stories have a way of bringing out a childlike openness within us, regardless of age. In that openness, heart and mind make connections the intellect alone may miss. He told these tales to illustrate the spiritual and practical truths he was trying to teach.

It is not enough to be inspired by spiritual truths. We must be able to apply those teachings to our daily life.

Each story is followed by a “Wisdom Gem,” illuminating spiritually vital topics such as Right Action, Courage, Unconditional Love, Faith and Wisdom -- an enjoyable way to explore and reflect on these universal principles.

Whether you are a teacher, parent, student, or simply a devotee, these stories are a great resource to return to again and again for inspiration, sharing and personal study. The message contained in each of these stories will give you the tools to do that, through the simple and ancient art of storytelling!

A helpful aspect of this collection, thoughtfully compiled by Nayaswami Maria McSweeney, is that the stories are organized by the qualities they illustrate, such as Love, Faith, Will-Power, and Courage.

This book is an enjoyable way to explore and reflect on universal principles like courage, devotion and non-attachment. A wonderful resource to return to again and again for continued inspiration, sharing and personal study.

Testimonials

This treasury of Indian tales, illustrating both spiritual and practical truths, will delight both the casual reader and students of eastern thought. The short stories feature a wide range of characters from saints such as Tulsidas and Padmapada, to realized masters such as Buddha, and Radha (Krishna’s female counterpart), to common people, to lions and frogs! These stories were told by Parmahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi, and following each is a very brief explanation of its meaning. A helpful aspect of this collection, thoughtfully compiled by Nayaswami Maria McSweeney, is that the stories are organized by the qualities they illustrate, such as Love, Faith, Will-Power, and Courage.

This collection will appeal to many:  lovers of a good story, philosophers interested in the eastern viewpoint, teachers and speakers seeking an anecdote to illustrate a topic, and followers of both yogic and Buddhist traditions. And some will appeal to children too.

About the Author

Paramhansa Yogananda

Paramhansa Yogananda

Paramhansa Yogananda (often spelled 'Paramahansa' Yogananda) was born on January 5, 1893 in Gorakhpur, India. He was the first yoga master of India to permanently live and teach in the West.

Yogananda's initial impact was truly impressive. But his lasting impact has been even greater. Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in 1946, helped launch a spiritual revolution throughout the world. His message was nonsectarian and universal.

Yogananda brought clarity to hundreds of thousands of people regarding the ancient teachings of India. These teachings include the path of Kriya Yoga, which Yogananda called the 'jet-airplane' route to God, consisting of ancient yoga techniques to hasten the spiritual evolution of the student.
