Why Do We Dream? The Most Surprising and Satisfying Explanations of Dreaming Everyone Should Know About

The Meaning of Dreaming, Savitri Simpson

Have you ever wondered why we dream?

Have you ever had recurring dreams, prophetic dreams, or dreams you believe contained hidden messages?

Have you had dreams that didn’t make any sense at all?

Have you ever tried to understand what your dreams meant?

If you answer “yes” to any of the above questions, then you must read The Meaning of Dreaming by Savitri Simpson.

From ancient to modern times, seers from varied religious and cultural backgrounds, scientists and psychoanalysts have conjectured about why we dream.

Thousands of books and articles have been written on this subject.

Yet, NONE provides answers with such fresh insights, wisdom, clarity, and as satisfying as the ones contained in The Meaning of Dreaming, based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi.

The Meaning of Dreaming

As someone who has been fascinated by dreams all my life and who has studied this subject, I can tell you that The Meaning of Dreaming, in my opinion, is the best and most meaningful book that has ever been written on this topic.

The author, Savitri Simpson, starts out by providing a thorough study of dreaming: 1) what science knows about dreaming, 2) theories about why we dream, 3) historical and biblical significance of dreaming through the ages.

She then presents explanations to dreaming from the much deeper teachings of yoga: 1) Where do our dreams come from? 2) How do we dream? 3) Why do some dreams seem to have deep significance while some others are meaningless? 4) To what extent should we analyze our dreams?

And finally, the most important question: WHY DO WE DREAM?

Why Do We Dream?

According to Yogananda, the true purpose of dreaming is to instruct and entertain us. This, he also says, is the purpose of life.

If the highest purpose of dreaming is to instruct or teach us, then what exact lesson(s) are we supposed to learn from dreaming?

Perhaps this excerpt from the book will give us a hint.

What Is Reality?

Just as we find this variety-filled dream life interesting, without believing in its actuality, so we must prove ourselves to be God’s immortal children, who can learn and be entertained by the “cosmic movies” of life without forgetting that they are temporary and delusive.

We must prove ourselves to be true sons and daughters of God by appreciating the lessons of these “cosmic movies,” and without losing the unchangeable, joyous poise of our inner being—the true reflections of immortal, unchangeable God.

The following is a story Yogananda often told to illustrate the principles outlined above.

“There was a farmer standing by a tree, absorbed in thought. His wife came rushing up, weeping, to announce that their only son had just been killed by a cobra.

“The farmer made no reply. Stunned by his indifference, the wife cried, ‘You are heartless!’

“’You don’t understand,’ the farmer replied. ‘Last night I dreamed that I was a king, and that I had seven sons. They went into the forest and all were bitten by cobras and died. Now I am wondering whether I ought to weep for my seven dead sons in that dream, or for our one son who has just been killed in this dream we are dreaming now.’

“The farmer was a man of spiritual vision. To him, the material world and the sub-conscious dream-world were both equally unreal ….”

Paramhansa Yogananda said: “A man is sleeping, and dreams that he is a soldier. He goes into battle, fights bravely, then is fatally wounded. Sadly, he dreams of his approaching death, perhaps thinking of the dear ones he must leave behind.

“Suddenly he wakes up. In joyful relief he cries, ‘Ah! I am not a soldier, and I am not dying! It was only a dream.’ And he laughs to find himself alive and well.

“But what of the soldier who actually fights in this earth-life, and is wounded and killed?

“Suddenly, in the astral world, he wakes up to find that it was all just a dream; that in that other world he has no physical body, no flesh to be wounded, no bones to be broken.”

“Don’t you see? All the experiences of this world are like that. They are nothing but dream experiences.”
