Right from the opening line, Autobiography of a Yogi resonates with the theme of divine friendship. Paramhansa Yogananda beautifully articulates man’s eternal quest and the inherent divine friendship that paves the way for ultimate realization:
“The characteristic features of Indian culture have long been a search for ultimate verities and the concomitant disciple-guru relationship.”
Swami Sri Yukteswar, Yogananda’s revered guru, not only guided him on his quest for God but also ignited a passion in him to share the liberating truths of Self-realization with the world.
A pivotal exchange between them underscores this calling:
“Why are you averse to organizational work?”
His guru's insightful analogy challenges Yogananda's initial reservations about spreading the teachings:
“Do you want the whole divine channa (milk curd) for yourself alone?” My guru’s retort was accompanied by a stern glance. “Could you or anyone else achieve God-contact through yoga if a line of generous-hearted masters had not been willing to convey their knowledge to others?”
Swami Sri Yukteswar emphasizes the importance of both the spiritual essence and organizations for its transmission:
“God is the Honey, organizations are the hives; both are necessary. Any form is useless, of course, without the spirit, but why should you not start busy hives full of the spiritual nectar?”
This profound counsel awakens a deep resolve within Yogananda:
“I would share with my fellows, so far as lay in my power, the unshackling truths I had learned at my guru’s feet.”
His heartfelt prayer echoes this commitment:
"Lord,” I prayed, “may Thy Love shine forever on the sanctuary of my devotion, and may I be able to awaken that Love in other hearts.”
